Last week this thought hit me: College students have access to the greatest technology ever, but few are using more than Facebook. It came out of a conversation with one of our college staffers at Faith Promise. When I asked, “What does your semester look like with papers and tests?,” he said, “I don’t know.” My next question: “What do you do with that $250 iPhone then – surf the net?” That started a conversation about how to use technology to plan your semester. So, in an effort to help you college students, here are some technology tips:

Use your computer or phone calendar to schedule your semester. At the beginning of the semester, put all of your papers and tests on the calendar and set adequate reminders. For instance, if you have a major paper due during the semester, put it on your calendar and set a reminder for a week or more before. Also set preparation time to work on that paper throughout the weeks before that paper is due. Or, if you have a test, set a reminder 3 days before so that you remember to get your notes together and study.

Back-up your notes and papers – have them available wherever you go. Using a simple FREE service like Dropbox gives you a backup copy where ever you are (up to 50 gb). If you are a mac user, use your mobileme account.

Create a system to keep up with your thoughts. Whether you use a program like Things or just a moleskin, keep up with thoughts that you have each day – both spiritual and school related. Some of your best thoughts will come at times that you do not expect. Be ready!

Use technology to your advantage! We live in an age where you can link your google calendar to your laptop and phone – so do it. Developing these simple skills in college will catapult you into your future – no matter what you decide to do.

What other technology are you using that could be helpful to college students?

Confession: I’m a recovering workaholic. Okay, it really is not that bad, but I have the tendency to be a workaholic. So, what does that look like? Here are some thoughts for you:

You always justify your schedule when questioned. When your family or friends question why your are working so much, you always have an excuse. You can never see the reality that you may be working to much.

You leave the office feeling like you should stay longer or get there earlier the next day. As your to-do list grows, you fail to prioritize and always feel you need to work more, longer or much harder.

Your Blackberry or iPhone is your closest friend away from work. Did you used to have friends and now you really do not? It’s probably because your phone has replaced them. Try putting it down in the evening and re-engaging family or friends.

Your in-box is more important than your outbox. Your job has become more about the tasks and assignments coming in than the people that you could be influencing in your office. Instead of focusing on every small task and it’s completion, you should be focused on the people walking the halls outside of your office.

You never have time for fun at work. You are the proverbial “stick in the mud” in the office. How could you “loosen up” when there is work to be done?

I love my job and have the privilege to work for one of the greatest pastor’s and churches in America. And even though the church is growing so quickly, there has to be a time to get away from it all. There have to be evenings to disengage. There has to be time to refocus and remain fresh.

Are you a workaholic? What would you add to the list?
