I can’t believe it!

As a parent, you get to be a part of Field Day again. So, today we finished Hayden’s Pre-K4 year with all the fun and games of Field Day. Here are some highlights of him showing off Dad’s speed and the awards ceremony with his class (he’s the itchy one).

If you know me, you know that I live by the rules. So, last night we were upstairs in the kids area waiting for Kim to finish up teaching and Madison asked if she could go up on stage. I would not have let her, but Kim said, “Sure.” Although the quality is bad, you will see that she has her worship on! It’s awesome.

While we were hanging out waiting for the service to end, I snagged these shots. To set the scene, she is in the Lobby at Faith Promise blocking one of the doorways. Our kids love the church and just make themselves at home there. We love it!

You’re probably normal

It’s getting late. It’s bedtime…again. You are standing at a crossroads. It’s the same crossroads that every other parent stands at each night, but you don’t know that. The crossroads: either weeping and gnashing of teeth during the bedtime routine or a quiet, peaceful, simple routine. BUT, you never know which it will be.

As parents, we often believe that we’re not normal. We believe that everyone else has it figured out – that their kids never have meltdowns or cry and wail why walking out of Target. But, we’ve all experienced it at some point. We’ve all walked through the tears of leaving the toy aisle or the McDonald’s drive-thru.

The problem: we’re not transparent enough to tell the stories and learn from others. We try to put on the front that everything is perfect – that we have it all together.

So, if you have kids, share a story of a parenting failure with someone today. Help them realize that they are normal and when they share their story, you will realize you’re probably normal as well.

3 simple prayers

To follow up with yesterday’s post, I wanted to tell you about 3 prayers that I pray for our kiddos each day. Honestly, before we had kids I never realized how much we would pray for these little rug rats! So, I pray 3 simple prayers for our kiddos each day:

For Hayden and Madison, I pray….

For them to honor God, serve Him faithfully with their entire lives and impact the world for Him.
For them to find God’s perfect match, a person who wants to honor God and serve Him and will love them faithfully.
Against insecurity – that they will be secure in Christ and their worth to Him.

Each day I may add in other things that they are facing, but this is my basic prayer. I’ve probably missed something.

The 1/3′s with my kiddos

Last Friday morning I was having breakfast with my almost 3-year old daughter, Madison. I began to think about the time that we spend together and what that time looks like. First of all, when we’re together I want to have fun. We laugh and play a lot. But the time with my kiddos is split into 1/3′s that looks like this:

1/3 of the time is spent showing them I love them.
1/3 of the time is spent training them to be like Christ.
1.3 of the time is spent praying and begging God that they will honor Him with their lives.

These thirds just become the natural part of our time and days together. It’s not something that I spend hours planning for – it’s just what happens. And, most of the time I find myself praying and begging God in the quiet moments that I look at them in the rear view mirror or as they look into my eyes.

How do you spend the time that you have with your kiddos?

Princess Fridays

This past Friday morning, Madison, my soon-to-be 3-yr old, and I went on our weekly MiMi’s breakfast date. We call it Princess Fridays because we spend our time playing her favorite Disney Princess game (yes, I did just link to the Disney Princess web page) and talking about the ways that a Prince should treat a Princess. Sometimes we even bring along the Prince and Princess figures.

Why do this? Isn’t she only 3? In our home, we believe that building the foundation for our kids future began 10 months before they entered the world. We want them to understand who God is, His plan and purpose for their lives, and how they can best serve Him. One huge part of that will be who you marry. So, we talk about how the Prince treats the Princess to lay the foundation for the future.

If you are not discipling your kids and teaching them about the wisdom they will need for the future now, get busy! Kim’s mom tells us that you only have your kids for 3 periods of 5 years, so use that time wisely. One of ours will be 5 in April. We’re a third of the way there!
