The past few days I have been at our Senior Team Retreat. We get away every fall and spend a few days planning for the following year. Last night I was unpacking my bag and realized that every time I take a trip I spend time unpacking my bag. The dirty clothes get put into the hamper for the wash, the toiletries go back under the cabinet (unless you have separate ones for travel like me!), clean clothes get put back up and the bag goes back in its place. You would never consider not unpacking your bag.

In the same way, you should spend time unpacking the ideas from the time you spent away. Each initial idea needs time for reflection, analysis and improvement. Whether you are at a conference or on a retreat, take time to unpack the ideas. Consider spending a significant amount of time asking tough questions about the decisions that were made, those that are in process and those for the future. Otherwise, you are just wasting your time.

Today I get the chance to meet the local administrators and executive pastors in the Knoxville area and share with them a presentation that I did in Phoenix, AZ earlier this year for the Church Solutions Conference on Strategic Staff Planning, Development and Evaluation. Here’s the opening thought:

Structure dictates structure.

Wherever you are, you can only accomplish what your structure allows you to accomplish. SO, you either change your structure or you change your plans. That’s your only two choices (we’ll, I guess leaving is a choice as well).

At FPC, I believe that the structure that Pastor, the Elders and Leadership Team created allows us to impact the Kingdom more effectively. FPC is staff lead, but we receive spiritual accountability from the Elders and financial accountability from the Leadership Team.

Because of the structure, we can make quick changes and try things that we never could if our structure were cumbersome. Our Senior Management Team makes decisions and we move on them. It’s a blast!

I hope the guys there are encouraged to lead at even greater levels because of our time together! Can’t wait to be challenged by them and begin new relationships as well.

Thanks to West Park Baptist Church for hosting the lunch and for their ministry to our city.

If you missed Unleash 2009, here are some videos from the worship. YouTube has made the quality of my Hi-Def Flip horrible, but you get the picture (if you don’t have a Flip, I would recommend getting one). Great experience at New Spring yesterday. In the videos, Lee McDerment is leading the New Spring band.

Last night Kyle and I were traveling back from Catalyst One Day following the directions given by the GPS. As we drove along, I wondered if my newly updated GPS maps knew a shorter way home from North Point Community Church than previously traveled. The further we drove, the lower the gas gauge dropped. I passed some gas stations thinking we would find one that had a restaurant as a part of it (classy, right?). It didn’t happen and when we finally stopped, here’s what we saw:

I proceeded to pump gas when Kyle saw a sign that said, “No Debit or Credit Cards” (poorly written on cardboard on one pump). I immediately stopped pumping gas and was at $1.50. Problem: I NEVER carry cash! Earlier in the day I had found a $1 bill in Kim’s car and now searched to find 50 cents. We found it with only 12 cents to spare. Still out of gas, we went back 12 miles to an open gas station before heading home. Crazy night!

Sometimes I think my relationship with God feels like my experience with the GPS. God is telling me where to go, but I am questioning whether He has updated His maps. After I follow Him, I can look back and see His leadership in my life. God, thanks for being WAY better than my GPS!

The last few days I’ve been at the Church Solutions Conference learning from some great leaders and having a lot of fun. Here’s a recap of what I learned:

Len Sweet and Ron Martoia are probably the deepest thinkers I have met. Honestly, I’m still not sure what they were talking about, but they are the futurists, so they certainly know.

Will Mancini and Auxano have some awesome team building tools.

I need to reflect more on Larry Osborne’s talk, “Innovations Dirty Little Secret.” It was a great session about innovation in the church.

Jeff, Steve and Lance with Fellowship Technologies could be the funniest guys I’ve ever met. You should use FellowshipOne just to get to hang out with them! Also, ask them about BAF.

Third Quarter Consulting will help FPC develop a multi-site strategy. Jim Tomberlin is a guru and it was great to learn about John Bishop’s church.

At my house, we have to use the website Church Marketing Stinks and not the alternative that Michael Buckingham used. We don’t say that word!

Aaron stays up later than me EVERY night (I am SO old).

Karen Butler, Katherine Kennedy, Amy Reed and the entire Church Solutions Magazine team are great hosts.

We had a great week. Can’t wait to see all that God is going to do in the future!
