Last week this thought hit me: College students have access to the greatest technology ever, but few are using more than Facebook. It came out of a conversation with one of our college staffers at Faith Promise. When I asked, “What does your semester look like with papers and tests?,” he said, “I don’t know.” My next question: “What do you do with that $250 iPhone then – surf the net?” That started a conversation about how to use technology to plan your semester. So, in an effort to help you college students, here are some technology tips:
- Use your computer or phone calendar to schedule your semester. At the beginning of the semester, put all of your papers and tests on the calendar and set adequate reminders. For instance, if you have a major paper due during the semester, put it on your calendar and set a reminder for a week or more before. Also set preparation time to work on that paper throughout the weeks before that paper is due. Or, if you have a test, set a reminder 3 days before so that you remember to get your notes together and study.
- Back-up your notes and papers – have them available wherever you go. Using a simple FREE service like Dropbox gives you a backup copy where ever you are (up to 50 gb). If you are a mac user, use your mobileme account.
- Create a system to keep up with your thoughts. Whether you use a program like Things or just a moleskin, keep up with thoughts that you have each day – both spiritual and school related. Some of your best thoughts will come at times that you do not expect. Be ready!
Use technology to your advantage! We live in an age where you can link your google calendar to your laptop and phone – so do it. Developing these simple skills in college will catapult you into your future – no matter what you decide to do.

I have been using Evernote on my iPod Touch, and online. Great for organizing notes, backing them up, and being able to access from multiple devices.
