The greatest part about working at FPC is that we get to work with friends – peers – people that you would really enjoy doing life with! Sometimes, the hardest part about working at FPC is that you work with your friends. Yesterday we looked at part 1 of Andy Stanley’s series on Trust vs Suspicion – your staff should really check this out! In the lesson, he makes this statement:
If what I experience begins to erode my trust, I will come directly to you about it.
It hit me that when we do performance reviews, we ask the staff team to evaluate one another. There is a place to note 2 things: 1) if you have told the person you are evaluating the areas they could improve in and 2) do you mind if we tell them. Nine times out of ten, the answer is no to the first question and the answer to the second question is yes.
We really don’t want to have the tough conversations with one another. It’s hard to have tough conversations, whether you are family or whether you are strangers. Most people are not good at it! How much better would we be if we were honest with one another and said the hard things along with the great things?
Tough conversations never get easier but it is encouraging when you get to see the positive difference they ultimately make in the releationship. Great leadership lesson!
