Today I was praying for a fresh perspective – specifically, that I could again see through the eyes of people that enter the FPC campus each week. Our Pastor often says:

People have to move past the natural to experience the supernatural.

People begin experiencing the natural when they hit the turn-in to your church. Some people see the landscaping and wonder if you care about the environment. They wonder why your signage doesn’t direct them to the place to enter the facilities. Once they enter, where do they go? Are the people they encounter friendly? Are the restrooms clean (or do they smell like a truckstop – have you ever been to a church with sofas in the women’s restroom?) Is the children’s area secure and clean?

None of these things can stop the message of Christ, but they sure can distract from it. They leave impressions in people’s minds. They are simple things, but I don’t see them as much any more. Yep, I’ve become used to our church environment and I have to work at it to see things through others eyes. So, how do you keep a fresh perspective:

  1. Ask new staff members to evaluate your campus, volunteers, etc – and listen to them. They have fresh eyes.
  2. Ask guests about their experience – specifically.
  3. Ask staff members to evaluate other staff members ministry areas.
  4. Walk around, look and listen…especially on the weekends.

  1. It‘s quiet in here! Why not leave a response?
