Often we look for leadership help and principles from the most respected people in the country. However, last night I learned a leadership lesson from a very reliable source – our 4-year old son. Kim and I were having a discussion (that’s spiritual code language for an argument) about something that is totally irrelevant to this post (and I honestly can’t remember what it was about – one of those really important things).
Our 4-year old, who was overhearing the “discussion,” looked at me and said, “Daddy, just walk away.” We think he actually learned this leadership principle from his friend Gracie and knew the perfect opportunity to put it into action.
Leadership is happening all around us – very poor leadership decisions and very strong ones. There are tons of leadership books, conferences, websites, etc. We are all getting “leadershiped out.” But the leadership mistake of today is the one that I made last night: the leadership principle was there, I understood it, but I did not practice it. Confession: I didn’t walk away!
Leadership is becoming like the Bible – we want tons of information and knowledge, but we never want to make application of it. In the church, it’s time to take action. I like action, so here are some thoughts for you:
- What leadership decision do you know that you need to act on but keep putting off?
- Will that decision cost you something (personally, financially, etc)?
- What is God saying to you about that decision, or have you even seriously prayed about it (I would consult Him first over John Maxwell or Andy Stanley – they would agree)?
- Who do you need to consult to help you take action? Don’t try to do it alone ~ see Proverbs 11:14.
ouch! that got me right in the mouth! i really needed to hear that. thanks
Glad you could share it with me
Lets be real, if Gracie taught Hayden it is only because Kim taught her. You know, Gracie always says Kim teaches her everything!!!!
You have to love it when God speaks to you through your child. But, just walk away is strong!!!
