I have a confession to make: I have been jaded by the media in our culture. It was a very subtle thing that happened over time, but my words often match that of the media and contain dumb generalizations and extremes. You know what I’m talking about – how many times have we heard the words recession, great depression or worse than the great depression? Obviously our nation has some financial woes, but we have hardly hit the days of the depression and we each live at levels greater than most people around the world.  Can you say dumb generalizations and extremes?

My vocabulary is littered with them – words of extreme like always, never, all or none. When I talk about church, I tend for extremes. When I talk about theology – you guessed it…extremes. In arguments, extremes. Extremes can be okay, but only when they really matter. Jesus seemed to use them when they mattered -

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Not sure about you, but I need to overcome dumb generalizations and extremes.
