Yesterday at Unleash 2009 I was reminded again that there are many pastors and staff members who are in a very tough spot. On one hand, they desire to change there church and see it become a ministry that is once again (or for the first time) reaching people and introducing them to the message of Christ. On the other hand, they are afraid of making the required changes because of the potential cost – perceived failure, losing their job, etc.
In Mark 9, the disciples ran into a situation in which they were asked to help a boy who was demon-possessed, but they couldn’t heal him. Jesus walks up and the boys father asks Him to help. After asking some questions, Jesus tells the father that God can do anything if he will just believe. The father response is awesome:
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:24
He was confused – he wanted to believe and thought he did. But, given the overwhelming situation, he recognized that he needed Jesus’ help and cried out for it.
No matter where you are in ministry, this story should encourage you. Two thoughts. First, the disciples were not prepared and did not have the faith to end this situation – and they didn’t ask for help either. Second, a willing dad who desired for his son to be healed asked for whatever he needed from Jesus to change the situation.
And, if you are in a tough spot, you can ask God for what you need – more faith, wisdom or action. Ultimately, if you care about the Church, take action. He’ll help your unbelief, if you’re willing to ask.
It‘s quiet in here! Why not leave a response?
