You may not know this, but I am naturally a pessimist. That’s right – I said it and I am probably better for it. One of my spiritual growth goals for 2009 is to begin any response that I have with a positive statement. The media inundates us with negativity – and people love negativity. Have you every noticed that a negative comment can make the shortest conversation become the longest one but being positive normally ends things pretty quickly?
Negativity sales. We bite immediately when we hear it and we fill our minds with it (otherwise all major news organizations would be out of business). So, what am I doing to curb my negativity?
- I’m trying to always respond positively. When someone says something that I struggle with, I’m trying to be positive. Maybe their motives are pure and they really aren’t trying to destroy my life and ministry.
- I’m trying to consider others feelings and struggles. I have bad days and so do others. I’m trying to consider what other people are dealing with in life (emotions, economy, family).
- I’m trying to defeat the flesh more by practicing spiritual disciplines more seriously. Spending more time in prayer, fasting, the Bible and giving to others helps me defeat me. Honestly, I am my greatest enemy and get in my way more than anyone else.
- I’m trying to be a better listener. I’m horrible here. I like to talk – just ask Kim.
What are some other suggestions that you have for me? I’m wide open and ready to learn – I want to be more positive!
I think that your last statement is the most impportant. I struggle with this big time. People just want to know that they have been heard. Some times the most powerful thing you can do is just simply listen to someone, and allow them to lay everything out on the table. it’s tough I know, but it can really leave a positive impact on that person.
In our past few converstations over the past week, I have really noticed a difference in you. Your tone, and demenor caused me to feel that you were tuned in and listening to me and have made me to feel very comfortable with what ever we are talking about…it also made me feel more connected to you. I see God at work in you, and I know He will continue to lead you in this area. Thanks for leading, and thanks for taking time to invest in me. Looking forward to serving with you bro.
