This month marks 4 years that I began the staff position of Executive Pastor at FPC (we’ve been on staff for almost 6 years). It was an internal job transition (I was formerly the Young Adult Pastor – picture that) and Pastor made it an easy one. He is great at letting people lead and make decisions (there’s another blog post to come on that). So what have I learned in 4 years:

  1. You need an emotionally secure pastor. My pastor allows me to make all decisions on day-to-day operations in the church. We walk together in unity – he gives the God-vision and I implement it. Insecure people can’t allow other people to lead. If your pastor is insecure, leave. The church will never grow past him anyway.
  2. Staff makes the difference. You really need the right people in the right positions going in the right direction. That takes longer than you think to accomplish, so if you are just starting out, focus on it! Remember, you will likely spend more money on staffing that anything else each year – be wise and value staff!
  3. You really need strong processes. If you want great outcomes, you need good processes. Good process lead to great outcomes – but define what great outcomes mean to your church (or Pastor if you are an XP).
  4. Empower others to lead. If you are making every decision, you are not leading. Here’s a test: when you are out of town, how many emails/phone calls do you get that require immediate attention? If it’s more than one, let others lead.If it’s worth being a part of, it has to be bigger than you!
  5. Say what you mean, mean what you say. When you are talking to people, say what you mean and mean what you say. Have the tough conversations and learn to say “no.” Art Jensen, Pastor of Small Group Ministries takes Bill Hybels quote to the next level. Art says, “Say the last 10% of the last 10% – just say what really has to be said.”
  6. Don’t underestimate technology. We live in a technology driven world – make sure your staff have adequate technology in the appropriate areas. Everyone always wants the latest and greatest – don’t give them that, but give them what it takes to be effective in their job.
  7. Have fun. There are days that will stink and days that will be the greatest of your life. Overall, if you can’t have fun, get out. My job is the greatest job in the world and they pay me to do it (don’t tell them I would stay if they didn’t pay me!).

Yesterday, Kim said that she hopes we live in Knoxville forever. I couldn’t agree more – we still have a ton left to do here! Thanks for 4 great years PC!
