Research was recently released from a new book by Ed Stetzer, Richie Stanley and Jason Hayes entitled, Lost and Found: The Younger Unchurched and the Churches that Reach Them. The research gives four values of Young Adults that will be key to reaching the next generation – community, depth, responsibility and connection. They defined each term based upon the research received. Here’s some brief insight on each:

  • Community – “life is meant to be experienced together, and they sense a need to be involved in genuine relationships.”
  • Depth – they would rather be “‘in over their heads’ in life as opposed to kicking around in the shallow end.”
  • Responsibility – “is strongly valued because young adults know their choices made a difference. Recycle. Buy or trade fair. Sponsor a child. These are the types of opportunities that define this generation.”
  • Connection – “mentoring or intergenerational ministry. They want to learn from those who have already experienced the things they are about to face.”

We are doing a great job in some areas and need to improve and grow in others. I’m looking forward to exploring this with our Senior Leadership Team at FPC in the future.
